Randy Barnes is a former American shot putter who was born on June 16, 1966, in Charleston, West Virginia. He is best known for setting the world record in the men's shot put with a throw of 23.12 meters (75 feet 10 inches) on May 20, 1990, in Los Angeles, California.
Barnes won a gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, and a silver medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. He was also a two-time World Champion and a two-time World Indoor Champion in shot put.
Barnes' career was marred by controversy when he tested positive for steroids in 1990, resulting in a two-year suspension from competition. Despite this setback, he remains one of the most successful shot putters in history and his world record throw still stands as of today.
